Historical Frankfurt - Sights

Frankfurt is just as rich in history as the banks, however, which is why we have briefly summarised the most important historical sites for you here:

The Roman & Römerberg

The city hall of Frankfurt has been called the "Römer" since the Middle Ages - for what exact reason is still uncertain today. There are several legends, but none have been proven so far. Perhaps because the building complex of the town hall with its stepped gable façade shows typical features of the Romanesque architecture of the 12th century.

During the Second World War, unfortunately, only the ground floor and the façade were used by the air raids, so that today modern offices are available behind the half-timbered façade, which means that Frankfurt's city politics and the Lord Mayor still have their seat here.

Over the last decades, the "Römer" became an important landmark of the city and so did the "Römerberg". The "Römerberg" is the town hall square and was already called a mountain at that time, because it is located on a hill.

Most of the half-timbered houses on the "Römerberg" were rebuilt true to the original after the Second World War. You can still marvel at Frankfurt's first bank "Großer Engel", which was located in the corner house. Because even then Frankfurt was the city for finances.

Old Nikolai Church

The Old Nikolaikirche finally rounds off Frankfurt's historic buildings and sights.

During the Second World War the bells were brought to a camp in Hamburg to protect them, but unfortunately not all of them found their way back to Frankfurt. In the course of the last decades bells were poured again and again until now 47 bells with 4 different octaves can enchant the ears of their listeners.

The first documentary mention of the church dates back to 1,200, when it was probably used as a palatine chapel. The famous Gothic roof gallery was not built until about 200 years later.

Today there are still services in the church on various dates and if you would like to take part in a guided tour just ask us. Our team at the reception will be happy to help you.

St. Bartholomew's Cathedral and observation deck

Did you know that there is a church in Frankfurt that is not really a church? Although the imperial cathedral is known as the cathedral and as an important building in imperial history, it was never recognised under ecclesiastical law. The imperial cathedral received its name because the German-Roman emperors were elected and crowned here.

In fact, it was found that the Imperial Cathedral is already the third church at this location in Frankfurt. The construction phase of the current building lasted 200 years and even then a dome roof was erected instead of a tower due to lack of money. The tower you see today was not built until the 19th century.

Today there is a viewing platform in the tower from which you can enjoy a unique view over Frankfurt and the skyline.

Opening hours:
Until October daily 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Main Sentry

Frankfurt's Hauptwache is one of the city's best-known historical sites, although it seems very small compared to the skyscrapers. But everyone who has ever been to Frankfurt knows her name - not least because of the subway station of the same name.

But what is the story behind the Hauptwache?

The beautiful baroque building of the Hauptwache stands in the middle of Frankfurt city centre and surrounded by all the modern high buildings, shops and skyscrapers. As you see the building today, it is unfortunately only a faithful replica of the Hauptwache, because it was also badly damaged during the Second World War.

The Hauptwache in Frankfurt was built for the first time in 1729 and 1730 and housed criminals such as the robber captain Schinderhannes until the end of the 18th century.

Since 1904 there was a café in the building on the central square in Frankfurt. The reconstruction of the Hauptwache, however, lasted until the 1960s due to the construction of the subway station and now you can still enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the hustle and bustle of the city.

Old Opera House

In 1880 the opera in Frankfurt was opened with Mozart's play "Don Giovanni", it was a place where the nobility and the celebrities of that time met for celebrations.

Even today, concerts and events are held in the building, whose style and charm originate from the neo-Renaissance - it is still one of the most popular contact points especially for musical events.

If you would like to know more about the opera, you can also register for group tours with a group of at least 12 people.
